Facing Discouragement

So this is a real thing…

I’ve been hit by discouragement more times than I can count. It doesn’t usually come alone—it shows up when I’m already worn down, and then one more thing happens. The car breaks down. A plan falls apart. A prayer feels unanswered. And I catch myself thinking, “Really? Another hit?” That’s when discouragement feels the heaviest.

The Battle

When I’m in that place, discouragement tells me lies:

  • “You’re not enough.”
  • “You’ll never get through this.”
  • “Why even try?”

Those thoughts get louder when I’m alone. But I’ve learned I’m not the only one who feels this way. Other men fight the same battle. I’m not walking through it by myself.

Holding On

What steadies me is knowing Christ is my anchor. Even when I don’t feel hope, I remind myself it’s still there. My feelings shift, but God’s promises don’t. Sometimes all I can do is whisper, “Lord, I trust You,” even when my heart feels heavy. That simple act helps me take the next step.

What Helps Me

  • I admit when I’m discouraged instead of pretending I’m fine.
  • I reach out to a friend or brother.
  • I go back to God’s Word and let it speak louder than my doubts.
  • I take one small step forward, even if it’s just prayer or a walk.

Encouragement

Discouragement may show up, especially when life feels like one blow after another. But it doesn’t get to stay. I’m not defined by setbacks—I’m defined by the One who calls me His son. And I remind myself I’m not alone. Other men feel this too, and that shared struggle is part of what makes us brothers. We don’t have to carry it alone. Anchored men face discouragement with hope, faith, and the strength of knowing we walk this road together.
